The key parts of my wish have now concluded. I met the Swedish womens football team, and saw a game. However, just because those two are all done does not mean our trip is over just yet! In fact, today (on Wednesday June 4), we went to see the Vasa museum
Now for a bit of a story on what happened. In the 1600s, a brand new Swedish ship called the Vasa was built. They believed that this new ship would make Sweden one of the greatest colonial powers in history. Like the Titanic, it was thought to be the greatest ship ever built. What they didn't know is that somewhere along the line, somebody screwed up, which lead to their not being enough ballast to keep the ship balanced.
When the Vasa set sail for the first time, it sailed a few hundred metres when a squall came along, which caused the ship to sink. Around 300 years later, in 1957, work began on getting the ship out of the water. Unlike the Titanic, raising the Vasa was somewhat achieveable, as it was only 40 metres underwater, compared to the Titanic's 3800 metres, which is 95 times deeper! Despite this, it took a long time to raise the Vasa out from the water, and work on this was not completed until 1959, almost two years after raising it began. Nowadays, the ship sits in a museum, and that museum is what we saw today
I never knew the back of the ship was so colourful
I also want to announce that tomorrow will be our FINAL full day in Sweden, so stay tuned for the post about our last day in the country
This is Sylas, signing off until the next post
